add_diesel_clocks

This is an old revision of the document!

This article is going to explain how to add a rev counter to a 1.4 / 1.5 diesel Citroen AX MK2 that i have personally done and added to my AX. The rev counter will replace the standard analog clock pictures below.

Step 1. Source a set of diesel clocks, either from a Citroen AX, Citroen Saxo, Citroen ZX or Peugeot 106. You can easily tell if they are diesel clocks as the rev counter will go from 0 - 60. And you can easily pick them up from eBay or the owners club.

(The ones on the left are Diesel. And the ones on the right are Petrol)

Step 2. When you have your set of clocks with the diesel rev counter, take the clocks apart and remove the rev counter dial itself. This can be removed using the 3 screws and the white clips at the back. The dial is held in with 3 screws as well. Also you will need to remove the printed circuit board attached to the dial by removing the 4 nuts that hold it in place.

Step 3. Take out your set of clocks from your AX and your going to want to remove the Analog Clock dial using the same method as Step 2.

Step 4. You will need to cut away a part of the white shroud that the clock sits in. As show in the picture below. Once you have cut it away, you will need to cover the printed circuit that powers the clocks using insulation tape.

Step 5. Screw the rev counter dial in to your original set of clocks, once it is screwed in, re-attach the circuit board and the holding nuts. and it should look like the picture above.

Step 6. As you look at the back of the rev counter dial, you will notice 4 pins, you are going to want to bend these so they don't face down and source a 4 pin connector block either from RS or maplin. If you can't find a connector then you can solder wires on but not recommended. You are then going to have to run wires as per the diagram below.

Pin 1 of the Dial is going to Pin 1 of the sensor.

Pin 2 of the Dial is going to Pin 2 of the sensor.

Pin 3 of the Dial is going to Ground.

Pin 4 of the Dial is going to Ignition or permanent.

(The pin numbers run from top to bottom, 1 being at the top and 4 being at the bottom).

Pins 1 and 3 of the rev counter dial need a wire bridged between them, this is crucial.

Step 7. Before installing the clocks back in your car, check that they are fully working, if they aren't then you will need to check your wiring again the diagram above.
