Hi all,been searching for a GT as previously mentioned....someone from another car club has put me onto someone with a uber clean ax gt 5...but its overseas and a left hooker...low miles and looks stunning and original.....i know I have to pay to get it back,but what's a fair price in your opinions before I'm getting too deep in?

Ok,the car is 1500 pounds,but shipping will cost me 700 quid,then a bit of faf getting it through nova test,at an overall cost of 2200 quid,am I wasting my time buying a left hand lemon,or does it seem a fair price,the car is mint,just bit scared off by 5 doors,left hooker and transportation costs,any thoughts?

Left hooker means it'll never be worth as much over here as a RHD car, so if you reckon you'd move it on again in a couple of years, the LHD aspect won't help values. I think you'd struggle to get the £2200 back, even if it was mint. That said, you could sell it back to Europe again.

GT5 is a rare beast, but it's rare because it was never as popular, so it really depends how much you want a GT5.

No tests to put it through, to the best of my knowledge. Just registration (£55), but could be wrong.

. its not about me making money on it,its heartbreakingly straight,in fact id say almost Concours,I also like zero corrosion,but left hooker and transportation is making me think ,also its a mk2,which isn't my first preference,if a straight,clean gt turns up on ebay,I would probably go for that,I'm just hung up on how straight this car is,didn't you get a left hooker from France??

If you are going to all the effort on bringing one over I would wait till you find a good 3 door. 5 door is never going to have the same fun factor or value, just rare/odd ball. The 5 door does not look as good, nor feel as good to drive.

LHD knocks the value on the head here, its only value would be selling it back to Europe (as said above). I have brought in a few LHD's (Sierra Cosworth's) and I soon got used to driving a LHD here but the value was never going to be close to RHD.

If you use the Auto Scout 24 site you will find a good 3 door they do come up, I was tempted by a lovely 3 door 93 Gt in Holland a couple of months ago, it was low mileage one owner car and looked to be very very straight 1800 euros.

Also LHD AX's are much better to drive than RHD AX's. You can also fit them with side draught carbs, so have a motorsport advantage if thats your thing.

A mk2 5dr is a very rare thing though! Don't think I've ever seen one before.

It's true, LHD cars are better than RHD ones. You don't have all the conversion bits Citroen used to make RHD cars, it's just as it was intended (i.e brake pedal straight to servo, etc).

If it's mint, rust free and you don't mind LHD then it might still be worth it. Personally I'd prefer a mk1 if it was a GT, and a RHD car. The 5dr thing wouldn't bother me as much, though I do prefer a 3dr I wouldn't let the additional doors put me off a good shell.

gt5's are mint! far cooler than a 3dr gt!!

For me a 5door looks way better as it's far less slabbly on the rear 3\4 panel and there's much more design detail. But that may just me and aethetics as there's probably a weight penalty...... at the end of the day it's what's good for you fella.

Rally cross,can I ask is there import duties,taxes payable on an Spanish,Portuguese import?....probably my last hurdle to manning up ax gt style.

no duties just a new registration fee at DVLA which is not much.

Wheres it being shipped from? Can't you just drive it back and take the ferry?

Technically driving a foreign registered car over here is illegal. Whether you'd actually get caught or not is another matter.

Why is it illegal? I see plenty of polish/Bulgarian/french registered cars around? And I can go and drive my car abroad?

I guess it's to stop a Brit buying a French-registered car, and then just bombing around with no tax or insurance etc, as VOSA's ANPR wouldn't pick it up on a database.

Driving a UK registered car abroad isn't the same thing. Your country of residence matches the car's. What would be the same is a French guy driving your car around in France.

Like I say, whether you'd actually get caught remains to be seen, but I'm guessing your insurance etc wouldn't be valid as you'd be driving in violation of a traffic law.

You can be prosecuted if you use your vehicle on a public road before you complete these steps, unless you’re driving it to a pre-booked MOT or vehicle approval test.

Its ok to drive it home but, you need a transit insurance on a car for export.
